Soul Care: the healing of the heart

19 March 2010 9 Comments

broken-heartNot many people are aware of needing a healing of the heart, but if everyone would just be honest enough to ask themselves how easy it is to love and forgive those who have hurt them, then they would quickly realize that everyone needs it! The question is not “whether” we need it, but “how” can we receive the healing of the broken heart. In the coming days I will address the following questions and I hope that you will join me with your comments:

  • What does it mean to have a broken heart?
  • How can we receive the healing of our hearts?
  • Can we sincerely forgive those who have hurt us?

Although we all know that forgiving is a vital ingredient for the healing of our hearts, and that Jesus exhorts us to forgive others as we would like to be forgiven, we all find it hard to put into practice the following teachings of Gospel …

Luke 6:37 “Forgive and you will be forgiven.”
Matt. 6:15 “If you don’t forgive others, neither will your Father forgive you.”
Mark 11:25 “If you have something against someone, forgive so that your Father in Heaven may also forgive you.”

It’s obvious from these and many other scriptures that, regardless of the wounds that we might have been inflicted, Jesus is calling us to forgive those who have hurt us, just as we want to be forgiven. But, if we perceive these as “requirements” to live up to in order to feel right with God, then we will be constantly feeling guilty towards Him, as we struggle with the inability to look in the eyes of those who have injured us and honestly say “I love you!”

Question: “Why is it so hard to love and forgive those who have hurt us?”

Some of our answers could possibly be:

  • Forgiving them creates a conflict with our sense of justice.
  • We cannot accept the consequences of what they have done.
  • We were injured and we want to be vindicated for what we suffered.
  • To bear the pain, we hardened our hearts toward those who wronged us.

Whether it’s anger, resentment, desire for revenge, hatred or bitterness that we feel, it’s not difficult to see that underneath our incapability to forgive we’re harboring emotions that were injured and a heart that desperately needs healing! This is a very important issue because, although we’re dealing with something deeper and even more painful of a cardiac problem, science has discovered what is called the “broken heart syndrome” and, according to an article on the Washington Post, it’s now verified that you can die of a broken heart!

It’s therefore very important, for the complete wellness of our being (body, soul and spirit), that we get the “healing of our broken heart“! Thank God that we have at our disposal the best counseling available on this syndrome, from a real expert in the field, the greatest “Soul Doctor” in the universe!

Isaiah 9:5 He shall be called “Wonderful Counselor” …
Psalms 34:18 The Lord is near to those whose heart is broken.
Psalms 147:3 He heals those whose heart is broken and binds up their wounds.
Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord has sent me to heal the brokenhearted.

Once we have established that Jesus is the specialist who has been certified by God as the expert in “healing broken hearts”, we must reflect on what it actually means to have a “broken heart”. Since we know that even believers, who have faith in the Lord, are not really exempt from this syndrome, it’s important that we try to understand what is it that makes us suffer when our hearts are broken by a disappointment, a loss, or the end of a relationship.

Don’t miss the continuation of this reflection, which we will publish here in the coming days.
