When speaking of the heart, most people refer to it as being the central core of their being and consider it the “compass” of their life! You often hear people say: “Do what your heart tells you to do!” or “Go where your heart leads you to go!”, not realizing the magnitude of such a statement! Does your heart really know the right thing to do or the right way to follow?

It all depends on what voice it’s paying attention to! Is it listening to selfish desires? Or is it listening to the voice of God’s wisdom, which is offered “to all man liberally” (James 1:5)? If your heart is filled with God’s Spirit and tuning to God’s voice, He will tell you what to do and where to go, and “you will hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left” (Isa. 30:21).

Otherwise, the Bible reveals that: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9). In fact, it says that in the old days “God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually, and it grieved him at his heart” (Gen. 6:5)!

That’s because in our heart is where we have our self-talk, where our inner conversation is constantly going on and where we debate in our selves the things that are happening to us each day and moment of our life! Things are always happening to us, whether good or bad, and we process all the emotions that these events cause in our heart by a personal debate within ourselves! If we are self-centered and think that the world owes us everything, we will often be disappointed by the events of life and will usually tend to nurture hate, resentment and bitterness in our heart, which can easily be transformed in horrible behavior and can really take us down a very troubled road in life!

Whereas, if our heart is turned towards God and we are truly seeking for His perspective and guidance in life, He is able to speak to our inner being and tell us what to do or where to go, and we can certainly trust God’s voice in our heart! Not exactly the voice of our own heart, but the voice of the Holy Spirit who’s speaking to our inner being and “directing our path” (Prov.3:6) to fulfill our destiny!

Let’s be honest with ourselves! If we are only desirous of gratifying our own selves, can we really trust the thoughts and intents of our heart? What is our heart telling us? Is it telling us to love and forgive the person that has hurt us, or to pay him back in double measure? Is it telling us to prefer the other person and give them a chance to prosper and grow, or to take advantage of whatever opportunity we have to get ahead of them and to leave them behind?

It really depends on what are we sowing into our heart … seeds of love, or seeds of hate? Seeds of forgiveness, or of resentment? Seeds of kindness, or seeds of covetousness? The Bible tells us that “whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap” (Gal. 6:7)!

What is the message that our heart is constantly hearing? What are we feeding it? Are we “hiding God’s Word in our heart, that we might not sin against Him” (Psalm 119:11)? Are we feeding on Gods’ Word and letting it be “the joy and rejoicing of our heart” (Jer. 16:16)? Or are we spending more time watching TV and letting whatever it broadcasts be sown into our heart? The competition is fierce as to what is getting our attention and what messages or seeds are landing into our heart! That’s why the Bibles exhorts us to “Keep our heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Prov. 4:23)!

We must be careful about what is being sown and growing in the garden of our heart, because that’s the fruit that we are going to reap in our life! Jesus said: “Either make the tree good and its fruit will be good; or else make the tree corrupt and its fruit will be corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit … for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. (Matt. 12:33-35).

Can you really trust your heart? You can, if you’re having a regular intimate conversation with God in your heart and listening to what the Spirit is telling you! That’s why the Bible constantly reminds us: “He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying …”
———————————————————————————————————————–

Figuratively speaking, the “heart” of a matter is where you find its true substance, what we should pay careful attention to, as all the rest around it might just be what appears to be, according to how it’s perceived from outside and the interpretation that we each give to it.

I believe that we were asked to “love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind” (Matt. 22:37) because that’s where we process all the thoughts and intents of our inner being, and where we can exercise our free will and majesty of choice, making all of our independent decisions in life.

That’s where God wants to be loved by us, because it’s in that place called “soul” that even He cannot decide for us! It’s there that we have full control of our lives and that we are able to freely process our feelings and thoughts and make our decisions!

There are several Hebrew and Greek words that were translated as ‘heart’ in our modern Bibles, but it mostly comes down to three main original words:

Hebrew ‘leb’, meaning: heart, will, feelings, intellect.

Hebrew ‘lebeb’, meaning: heart, understanding, awareness.

Greek ‘kardia’, meaning: heart, thoughts, feelings.

Think of the verse: “The word of God is sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart!” (Hebrews 4:12)

What it’s actually saying is that God’s Word is so powerful that it can actually separate our soul from our spirit and even discern the thoughts and intents of our heart, where we make our free choices and decisions! That’s how Jesus was able to look into people’s hearts and discern their true intentions, instead of judging them for their behavior …

You might say that there are really 3 persons in each one of us: 1) the one that others see, according to how they perceive us from outside (body), 2) the person that we think we are, according to how we see ourselves (soul), and 3) the person that we truly are, according to how God knows we are, because He can see the most hidden part of our being (spirit).

The Bible says that we were “created in the image of God” (Gen. 1:27), and it’s interesting that, like the Trinity, our “whole being” is made of three parts: 1) body, 2) soul, 3) spirit.

“I pray God your whole being, spirit, soul and body, be preserved blameless.” (1Thes. 5:23)

The New Testament also says that we are the “temple of God” (1Cor. 3:16) and, just like the temple in Jerusalem, our personal temple is made of three main areas:

Our body, which like the “Outer Court” of the temple is exposed to the world around us and communicates with it;

Our soul, the “Inner Court” where we can exercise our priesthood and responsibility of administering the temple of our life with our choices and decisions;

Our spirit, which like the “Holiest of all” is hidden behind a veil and it’s seldom seen or recognized even by those who are the closest to us.

It’s through our physical senses that we communicate with the physical world around us, taking that information and sending it to our mind, where it’s processed with our thoughts.

And it’s through our spiritual senses that we also communicate with the spiritual world and, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we can commune with the Lord in worship and prayer in our “Holiest of all”, as “the veil is rent” (Mark 15:38) and “done away in Christ” (2Cor. 3:14).

Finally, between our “Outer Court” (body) and our “Holiest of all” (spirit), where God’s Spirit dwells and “bears witness with our spirit that we are His children” (Rom. 8:16), we have our “Inner Court” (soul), where we’re exercising our freedom of choice, after processing all the information that reaches us through our thoughts and emotions, whether it comes from the physical or spiritual world. It’s in that dialogue between our heart and mind that we process the information and use our free will to make decisions in life …

Proverbs 4:23 tells us to “keep our heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life”, and I believe that it’s vital to carefully guard this very important part of our inner being called “heart”, because that’s where our feelings and thoughts and particularly our will are located, and where we make the decisions that direct our lives. It’s in our soul that we exercise our God given freedom, what we call our “majesty of choice”!

In the coming articles we will explore how to cultivate an intimate relationship with the Lord in order to carefully guard our heart. Don’t miss them!

There’s a secret place inside of us where our heart and mind are in a continual dialog with each other, trying to sort things out in a way that will make us feel good, but not always succeeding at it. Our thoughts and our emotions are constantly discussing issues and events that are effecting us in a personal way, and trying to decide what to do about it …

If someone does and says something that is hurting our feelings, our mind will immediately start a conversation with our heart to talk it over and decide whether to let it go, or retaliate in some ways that would make things seem fair. On the other end, if we meet a situation that stirs our compassion, our heart will start a conversation with our mind to see if there’s a way that we can help it or an excuse to justify ourselves for not doing anything. All of this happens in that “holy place” called “soul”, where we exercise our majesty of choice!

The question is whether our heart is actually able to think and process any kind of information, and it’s interesting to note that Proverbs 23:7 does not exactly say: “As a man thinks in his mind …”, but it says very clearly that: “As he thinks in his heart, so is he”!

There are many verses in the Bible indicating that the heart actually has its own thoughts. For example, in the Old Testament Daniel told king Nebuchadnezzar “…that you may know the thoughts of your heart” (Daniel 2:30). And in the New Testament Peter told the sorcerer to repent, so that: ‘…the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.’ (Acts 8:22b)

There are more than 400 places in the Bible where the word ‘heart’ was used to indicate a place of intellect, thought, emotions, character, love, compassion, etc … but the interesting thing is that Science has also recently discovered that the physical organ that pumps blood through our veins is actually able to think, and it does have emotions!

I recently read an article, titled “Yes, the Heart Really Can Think and Have Emotions!“, that reported a English TV broadcast on Channel 4 (June 26, 2006), titled: “Mindshock: Transplanting Memories?”, where they interviewed scores of recipients of heart transplants who were experiencing memories that did not belong to them, but were instead part of the deceased donors’ lives, as it was confirmed by their loved ones! In other words, the heart contained “memories” that were transferred from the deceased person to the receiver…

The same article named a heart specialist, Dr. Andrew Armour, Ph.D., who discovered the presence of neurons in the heart, and that it contains a complex nervous system of its own. He realized that there is a much more intimate connection between the heart and the brain than it had previously been known… Dr. Armour claims that the heart actually sends more information to the brain than the other way around!

The publisher of his “Anatomical and Functional Principles stated that ‘Groundbreaking research in the field of neurocardiology has established that the heart is a sensory organ and a sophisticated information encoding and processing center, with an intrinsic nervous system sufficiently sophisticated to qualify as a “heart brain”! By providing an elaborate anatomy and physiology of the cardiac nervous system, this monograph contributes to the newly emerging view of the heart as a self-organized system that maintains a continuous two-way dialogue with the brain and the rest of the body.

It certainly seems that our heart has thoughts of its own, and therefore not only our mind needs to be renewed, but even our heart might have memories that need to be healed! … The Bible makes it clear that Jesus was not only sent to preach the Gospel to the poor, but also “to heal the broken hearts and set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18).

“He heals the broken hearts, and binds up their wounds!” (Psalms 147:3)

In the coming weeks we will look deeper into this conversation that happens between our thoughts and emotions, and how we can all experience the healing of our heart!

You need the “healing of your heart” (Luke 4:18) as much as the “renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2), because broken emotions will impact your thoughts and interpretation of life, which will reflect in your behavior and actions!

A few months ago, in July 2010, my friend Janet Daughtry and I (Renato) were interviewed by Dr. Joseph Peck in a Webinar entitled “God’s Vision For Renewing Your Mind“, of the Visions777 series, which included Janet’s presentation on “The renewing of your mind“, followed by another presentation of mine on “The healing of your heart“!

Click here to watch a replay of the Webinar: “God’s Vision For Renewing Your Mind“.

Janet explained how we all need to be “transformed by the renewing of our mind”, in order to see things with God’s eyes and perceive them for what they really are, not for what we might believe they are! She stated that our beliefs are the filter through which we view and respond to the issues of life. In other words, if our beliefs are negative, our response to a crisis will be negative, but if our beliefs are positive we will tend to interpret life events more positively. She was basically saying that our beliefs are the lens through which we view life.

What I felt led to add is that it works both ways! It’s true that our beliefs are the lens through which we view and respond to life, but also the way we personally interpret the events of life is how our “beliefs” are formed. “For now we see through a glass, darkly.” (1 Cor. 13:12)

Our beliefs come from a variety of sources: from our past experiences, and from the input that we received from our family, friends, teachers, mass medias and society around us… Our beliefs are formed from all the information we have recorded in our brain, according to how we have personally interpreted it throughout the course of our life.

Dr. Carolyn Leaf, a Christian neuroscientist who studied the brain for about 25 years, wrote in her book, “Who Switched Off My Brain?”, that when an important event happens to us (whether good or bad), we have about 24 to 48 hours to process that information and to “ask, answer and discuss” it within ourselves. Otherwise that information will be stored in the deep archives of our brain and will become part of us!

What I gathered from it is that, if someone ever said or did something terrible to you, if you didn’t process it in your heart and mind, in order to come to peaceful terms with it within yourself, then that message has filtered down into the deep archives of your brain and has been played over and over to you. And the more you continue to think about it and obsess over it, the more it reinforces that altered belief system within yourself, which is affecting your thoughts, your emotions, and even your behavior! That’s why the Bible tells us that: “When you are angry, do not let the sun go down upon your wrath.” (Ephesians 4: 26)

In other words, our interpretation of life events (whether true or false) has contributed to the forming of our beliefs, which are now affecting to only our thoughts and emotions, but also our decisions and actions in life!

Beliefs –> Thoughts –> Emotions –> Actions

As the picture of this train shows, our beliefs are the power engine impacting our thoughts and emotions, and ultimately even our actions in life! Therefore if our beliefs system is healthy, then our thoughts and emotions are also positive and they are helping us move forward in life, no matter what mountain we must climb ahead of us …

However, if we ever experienced painful circumstances that we did not come to peaceful terms with (particularly events that happened when we were too young to process them in a wholesome manner), then those past hurts have been recorded in our emotional memory and they continue to have a major role in our personal perception of life …

What happens is that, whenever we encounter a similar situation that reminds us of those hurt memories, even subconsciously, we react impulsively and reactively, instead of being intentional, and ultimately the consequences of those reactions will be of the kind that we did not desire in the first place! You might say that, if we live out of a broken heart, instead of moving forward, we will be pulled back and down the hill, so to speak, because we are reacting emotionally instead of being intentional with our lives …

Unfortunately most of us live out of our “feelings”, because what’s going on inside of us emotionally in any given moment has a major impact on our thoughts, and therefore our decisions and actions are often guided by how we “feel” about the situation we are facing. However, since we cannot fully trust our feelings, knowing that they are based on our own “personal interpretation” of what is happening to us, coming from perceptions that might be altered and not telling us the truth, then we need to find a remedy, what the Bible calls the “healing of our broken hearts” (Psalm 147:3)!

In order to “renew your mind”, you need the “healing of your heart”!

That solution has been provided by our “Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6), who was “sent to heal the broken hearts and set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18), and in the coming weeks we will explore further how you can avail yourself of what He offers you: the “healing of your broken heart”!
——————————————————————————————————————–

How to hear God’s Voice (by Mark Virkler)

Among the existing religions, Christianity alone offers you a personal relationship with your Creator, beginning here and now and lasting throughout eternity. Jesus declared, “This is eternal life – that they may know God” (John 17:2). Unfortunately, many in the Christian Church miss the great blessing of fellowship with our Lord because we have lost the ability to recognize His voice within us. Though we have the promise that “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10:27), too many believers are starved for that intimate relationship that alone can satisfy the desire of their hearts.

I was one of the sheep who was deaf to his Shepherd until the Lord revealed 4 simple keys (found in Habakkuk 2:1, 2) that unlocked the treasure of His voice.

Key #1: God’s voice in your heart often sounds like a flow of spontaneous thoughts.

Habakkuk knew the sound of God speaking to him (Hab. 2:2). Elijah described it as “a still, small voice” (I Kings 19:12). I had always listened for an inner audible voice, and God does speak that way at times. However, I have now found that usually God’s voice comes as spontaneous thoughts, visions, feelings, or impressions.

For example, have you ever been driving down the road when a thought came to you to pray for a certain person? Do you believe it was God telling you to pray? What did God’s voice sound like? Was it an audible voice or a spontaneous thought that lit upon your mind?

Experience indicates that we perceive spirit-level communication as spontaneous thoughts, impressions and visions, and Scripture confirms this in many ways. Therefore, when you want to hear from God, tune to spontaneous thoughts.

Key #2: Become still so you can sense God’s flow of thoughts and emotions within.

Habakkuk said, “I will stand on my guard post…” (Hab. 2:1). He knew that to hear God’s quiet, inner, spontaneous thoughts, he had to go to a quiet place and still his own thoughts and emotions. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to “be still, and know that He is God”. There is a deep inner knowing (spontaneous flow) in our spirits that we can experience when we quiet our flesh and minds. If we are not still, we will sense only our own thoughts.

To receive the pure word of God, it’s important that my heart is focused as I become still, because my focus is the source of the intuitive flow. If I fix my eyes on Jesus, the flow will come from Jesus. But if I fix my gaze on some desire of my heart, the intuitive flow comes out of that desire. To have a pure flow I must carefully fix my eyes upon Jesus.

Fix your gaze on Jesus (Heb. 12:2), becoming quiet in His presence and sharing with Him what’s on your heart. Spontaneous thoughts will begin to flow from the throne of God to you and you will actually be conversing with the King of Kings!

Key #3: Fix the eyes of your heart on Jesus, seeing in the Spirit the visions of God.

Habakkuk said, “I will keep watch to see”, and God said, “Record the vision” (Hab. 2:1,2). Habakkuk was actually looking for vision as he prayed. He opened the eyes of his heart, and looked into the spirit world to see what God wanted to show him.

God has always spoken through dreams and visions, and He specifically said that they would come to those upon whom the Holy Spirit is poured out (Acts 2:1-4, 17).

I had never thought of opening the eyes of my heart and looking for vision. However, I have come to believe that this is exactly what God wants me to do. He gave me eyes in my heart to see in the spirit the visions of God. There is an active spirit world all around us, and it’s full of angels, demons, the Holy Spirit, the omnipresent Father, and His Son, Jesus. The only reasons for me not to see this reality are unbelief or lack of knowledge.

In order to see it, we must look. Daniel saw a vision in his mind and said, “I was looking… I kept looking… I kept looking” (Dan. 7:2,9,13). As I pray, I look for Jesus, and I watch as He speaks to me, doing and saying the things that are on His heart. Christians will find that if they will only look, they will see, in the same way they receive spontaneous thoughts.

Jesus is “Emmanuel, God with us” (Matt. 1:23). It is as simple as that. You can see Christ present with you because He is present with you. In fact, the vision may come so easily that you will be tempted to reject it, thinking that it is just you. But if you persist in recording these visions, your doubt will soon be overcome by faith as you recognize that the content of them could only be birthed in Almighty God.

Jesus demonstrated the ability of living out of constant contact with God, declaring that He did nothing on His own initiative, but only what He saw the Father doing, and heard the Father saying (Jn. 5:19,20,30). Is it possible for you to live out of divine initiative as Jesus did? Yes! Just fix your eyes upon Jesus. The veil has been torn, giving us access into the immediate presence of God, and He calls you to draw near (Lk. 23:45; Heb. l0: 19-22).

Key #4: Journaling, the writing out of your prayers and God’s answers, brings great freedom in hearing God’s voice.

God told Habakkuk to “record the vision” (Hab. 2:2). This was not an isolated command. The Bible records many examples of individual’s prayers and God’s replies (e.g. Psalms, Prophets, Revelation). I call this process “two-way journaling,” and I have found it to be a fabulous catalyst for clearly discerning God’s inner, spontaneous flow, because I am able to write in faith for long periods of time, simply believing it is God. With journaling, I can receive in faith, knowing that when the flow has ended I can examine it carefully, making sure that it lines up with Scripture. You will be amazed!

Doubt may hinder you at first, but throw it off and remind yourself that it’s a Biblical concept, that God is present, speaking to His children. Relax. When we cease our labors and enter His rest, God is free to flow (Heb. 4:10). Sit back comfortably, take out your pen and paper, smile, and turn your attention toward the Lord in praise and worship, seeking His face. After writing your question to Him, become still and fix your gaze on Jesus. You will suddenly have a good thought. Don’t doubt it; simply write it down. Later, as you read your journaling, you will be blessed to discover that you are indeed dialoguing with God.
—————-
A final note: Knowing God through the Bible is a vital foundation to hearing His voice in your heart, so you must have a solid commitment to knowing and obeying the Scriptures. It is also very important for your growth and safety to be related to spiritual counselors. All major directional moves that come through journaling should be confirmed by counselors before you act upon them.” (Dr. Mark Virkler)
—————————————————————————————————————-

Morning Praise: Jesus, as I sit here in the early morning and look out the window, I can only lift my heart towards You and praise You, for You watch over me carefully, like a father who cares for his dear child! I love being Your child, playing with You, enjoying life with You, taking time to enjoy nature and the world that You have created around me…

I know that I should do more of this. Please help me to enjoy life more, to “rejoice with the wife of my youth” (Proverbs 5:18) that You so kindly put next to me. My heart cannot even begin to express the gratitude that I feel for all that You have done for me!

You have done so much for me, Jesus, and I’m thankful! I’m so thankful for all the people that You have put in our path, special people… I’m thankful that I can share Your love with them, and I want to do more of that! I’m thankful that, together with my wife, we can make a team that can reach out and share Your love with the world, and I want to do more of that! I’m thankful that You have equipped us with much training that we can use to impact the people around us, and I really want to do more of that, Jesus!

I want to share Your love with others, I want to touch the hearts of those that You put in our path, I want to reach out and feed Your sheep! Jesus, please help me, equip me, fill me with Your Spirit and empower me to touch the hearts of those that You put on my path and reach them with Your love! Please fill me with Your Spirit and help me to make clear plans and steps towards reaching those goals! Will You please fill me with Your love? Will You give us Your Spirit of love so we can reach others with Your love? I need You, Jesus!

Words From Jesus: “Life is about sharing! The meaning of life is to share it with others. “It’s not good”, and I never intended, “for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18), for it’s in sharing your life with others that you find true meaning!

You belong to a body and, apart from that body, you have no purpose in life! Each member of the body is there to serve a purpose and to help the whole body function! “My body is made of many members” (1 Cor. 12:12), but if every member will just care for itself and does not care for the other members, then what do you think it would happen to the body?

My body is torn right now, because My children are not functioning together as they should, serving one another in love! I want you to “feed My sheep” (John 21:16) and to “strengthen thy brethren” (Luke 22:32)! It’s time for you to strengthen My body, for there’s quite a bit of disarray amongst My flock right now! Many don’t really understand what’s happening and need to be strengthened! They need to be recharged with “the water of life” (Rev. 22:17) and with “the bread of heaven” (John 6:58)!

This is your chance to get out there and strengthen your brethren and feed My sheep! This is the time for you to gather the flock around My word, and you can do that! You can reach out to those who are lost and confused and gather them around My word! It’s My word that will give “light and understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130), and it’s My word that will strengthen your brethren! Take time to feed My sheep and I will take care of you! Take time to strengthen your brethren, and I will strengthen you! I love you!”

Once you have recognized the symptoms of a broken heart in your life, you become aware that you need an inner healing, what we recently called the healing of the soul. However, to start this healing process, you will need to receive an accurate diagnosis and the most suitable treatment for your personal case. To get these, you will need to set aside some time to meet the Soul Doctor, the One that we have identified as the greatest soul expert and specialist who was sent by God “to heal the brokenhearted.” (Luke 4:18)

Becoming aware of having a broken heart, and knowing that the Lord is the Soul Doctor who is able to heal you, are just the first steps towards the healing of your heart. But these alone are not enough, if you don’t personally invite Him to come into your heart and visit the innermost parts of your being, so that He can bring to light those hidden areas that are causing your pain and provide you with the right diagnosis and the personal treatment that will start the healing process in your life…

“The entrance of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130)

The most powerful tools that God can use to “enter” into the hidden areas of your heart and bring to light what has been injured and needs to be treated, are the Logos and the Rhema. These are both the written Word of God (Logos) and the spoken Word of God (Rhema), what some of us have come to appreciate as the precious Words From Jesus that He is speaking directly to our hearts, when we personally spend time with Him.

“The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, and it penetrates even to divide the soul from the spirit, and is able to discern the thoughts and feelings of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

The problem is that most believers today, even those who have sincere faith in the Lord, are not always able to find in God’s written Word the personal answers that they can apply to their everyday life. Unfortunately many get lost in the theological explanations that are so easily released as general working recipes by those who think to be qualified for it, but who are not carefully examining what might be at the root of the problem that afflicts them.

What they need is personal and intimate time with the “Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:5) who was sent by God to “bind up our wounds” and “heal the brokenhearted” (Psalm 147:3).

You might be thinking that it’s not easy to have a personal two-way dialogue with Jesus, as you can’t really see Him and He is not like other human doctors that you can simply visit. Even His disciples were troubled, when they heard that Jesus was about to leave the world, but He reassured them, saying: “Let not your heart be troubled … I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter that may be with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it sees Him not, neither knows Him: but you know Him; for He lives with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless.” (John 14:16-18)

In other words, Jesus replaced His bodily presence with the Holy Spirit, Who was sent to comfort our hearts, and He promised to continue talking to us through “the Spirit of truth, who will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatever He hears, that shall He speak …for he shall receive of Mine, and shall show it to you” (John 16:13)

Some people might find it strange, but the Word of God says that we can hear His voice speaking to us and showing us the way: “When you must turn to the right hand, or to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it.” (Isa. 30:21)

Even those of you who are reading this can learn to hear the voice of God speaking to your hearts, so that you can receive from Him a personal diagnosis on the condition of your soul and the tailored made treatment that will help you experience your inner healing.

In our reflections on the care of our soul and our spiritual wellness, we have previously seen that, due to the wrong choice of our ancestors, we human beings inherit from birth the symptoms of a broken heart that are commonly referred to as “emotional wounds”.

These will often manifest themselves with negative feelings of:

Fear (the need to feel secure);
Insecurity (the need to feel protected);
Guilt (the need to be justified);
Low self-esteem (the need for a sense of value);
Inferiority complex (the need to feel unique and important);
Contempt for oneself (the need to redeem our own identity);
Sense of rejection (the need to feel accepted for what we are);
Sense of worthlessness (the need to feel loved and part of God’s family).

We all come into this life with some of these wounds imprinted in our soul, and these need to be treated from our early childhood or they will develop into unhealthy attitudes that will negatively influence our whole lives and relationship with others as adults.

Those who are not met with love when they are born, or when they grow up, who do not feel safe and cared for, who have no sense of value or self worth, who do not feel wanted or accepted for who and what they are, they will often try to compensate for these needs by focusing on themselves and living an egocentric life, unable to love and forgive others.

The attitudes of those who are sensitive and fragile, who have a constant need for attention, who are remarkably insecure and are constantly looking for advice on what to do in various circumstances of life, reveal that they were probably raised in an environment that did not bring healing to their soul, but on the contrary it contributed to foster these wounds.

Those with broken hearts might have felt rejected for an unwanted pregnancy while they were still in the womb, or could have been abruptly separated from the mother at birth and placed in an incubator for a long time, or at a young age they might have spent a long time in the hospital, away from the reassuring presence of the mother. They might have grown up without the presence of the parents, because these died or were separated or engaged in stressful work activities. They may have been the subject of continuous derogatory and degrading comments, or grew up in a rigid and severe atmosphere and never received a word of approval from the parents or those who had authority over them. They might have suffered some physical violence, or were born with physical defects, or affected by some handicap or disability … thus the healing of their soul has not yet begun.

Just as we feel pain when someone touches a physical wound that is not yet healed, we also suffer when we don’t feel loved and understood, accepted and important, or when we perceive that we are rejected, because meeting such an attitude reopens the great wound that was produced on the day of the expulsion of our ancestors from the garden of Eden.

The good news is that Jesus is our “Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:5) who came to “heal the brokenhearted and bind up our wounds” (Psalms 147:3)!

He is our true Soul Doctor, who came not only to bring free eternal salvation to our spirit and the promise of resurrection to our body, but also to heal our soul and bring redemption to our “entire being: spirit, soul and body” (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

We know that our spirit has received salvation by faith, when we accepted Jesus as our Savior, and also that our body will receive its full salvation on the day of resurrection, but from the moment that our spirit was saved until the day when our body will be resurrected, there’s a process of healing for our soul that will equip us to be “thoroughly furnished” (2 Tim. 3:17) for the eternal heavenly home that the Lord has prepared for us.

“To as many as received Him, gave He power to become the sons of God.” (John 1:12)

It’s on ongoing process and, along the path of our Christian journey in life, we become aware that in Jesus we are:

Forgiven
“Your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.” (1 John 2:12)

Justified
“Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus.” (Romans 5:1)

Accepted
“Him that comes to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37)

Loved
“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love: and with loving kindness have I drawn you. (Jeremiah 31:3)

Secure
“They shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” (John 10:28)

Chosen
“He has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world.” (Ephesians 1:4)

Valued
“What manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called God’s children.” (1 John 3:1)

Important
“Created for the good works which God had prepared for us.” (Ephesians 2:9)

Approved
“He that in these things serves Christ is accepted by God, and approved amongst men.” (Romans 14:18)

If you haven’t yet experienced the unconditional love of Jesus in your heart, you can begin today, by simply inviting Him to come into your life, forgive your sins and start that healing process that will give you the assurance that you are fully loved, accepted, secure and valued as God’s beloved child. He loves you!

In the coming days we will continue our reflections on our “soul care” and see how we can start this process of healing in our personal lives, by receiving from our Soul Doctor the personalized diagnosis and individual therapy that He has for each of us.

Healing Broken Hearts is an international ministry, reaching out to those whose hearts have been broken by the hardships and tragedies of life, but desire to move on to a happier season with the help of someone that will coach them on a path to victory.

We are very happy to inform you that it’s possible for you to move from a painful to a joyful life! By letting go of your sorrows, and by receiving in exchange the offer of “beauty for ashes, oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness” (Isaiah 61:3), you will learn to enjoy your walking through life once again!

Healing Broken Hearts will teach you to take proper care of your soul, so that you can achieve wellness for your entirel being (body, soul and spirit) by moving through a process that will take you from where you are to where you would like to be for the rest of your life.

This transitional process is not based on psychotherapy, nor on counseling, but on your own personal will and choice to leave the past behind and move towards a better future, stimulated by what has professionally become known as Life Coaching.

The Apostle Paul promoted this approach, when he wrote: “This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth to those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13)!

The transition will happen by following definite steps towards your goals:

Becoming aware of “who” and “where” you presently are

Having a clearer picture of where you really would like to be

Being willing to let go of the past and start moving towards the future

Asking someone who believes you can get there to hold you accountable

We recently started to write articles on the healing of the heart, in order to address the causes of our emotional wounds, that prevent us from living in line with our deepest values, and learn to give proper attention to the care of our soul.

If we would take a poll, asking: “What’s your most important value in life?”, I’m sure that most people would answer that it’s LOVE! … mostly meaning love for their loved ones.

The responses would most probably come in various forms, since we each have our own personal view of how we see love in our mind, whether we picture it in our family, or lover, or life partner, or children, or parents, or friends, or neighbors, or pets, or God, but always boiling it down to this unique and important value that we call: LOVE!

However, if we would ask for an honest answer to find out how many of us think that we are capable of loving others with real unconditional love, and with no expectations in return, I’m quite certain that very few of us really know how to love that way! Why is it?

Again, the responses would vary: some would try to justify it by saying that we humans are too fallible in our nature, and therefore incapable of living according to our true ideals, while others would say that we are too preoccupied with our daily problems to think about others, and so on … but the Word of God tells us that Jesus has called us to love that way, when He said to: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39)! In other words, “all things you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them” (Matthew 7:12)!

So, if Jesus asked us to love that way, although He was aware of our human fallible nature and daily preoccupations, then He must have also known that somehow we have access to that type of love. Therefore there are no excuses, we just need to identify what prevents us from it, so that we can find a remedy and solution to the problem.

In both of our previous articles on this very same issue, “The healing of the heart” and “The healing of the soul“, we established that most of us have some deep wounds in our hearts that are preventing us from being able to love unconditionally, and that we therefore need some type of a inner healing, what we called:

The Healing of a Broken Heart!

Question: How do we recognize the symptoms of a broken heart?

When our body is ill, it manifests symptoms, such as fever, pain, fatigue, cough, vomiting, etc., and these lead us to visit a specialist who, through appropriate medical examinations, will try to understand the cause and take care of the problem.

When our soul is ill, it also manifests symptoms, such as unhappiness, sadness, anxiety, frustration, disappointment, anger, resentment, bitterness, depression, fear, emptiness, feelings of worthlessness, etc. Unfortunately, most times we don’t turn to a specialist who can understand the cause and take care of the problem, but we tend to blame other people or circumstances as being responsible for our condition. This can only make the situation worse, because it quite wrongly make us feel like “victims” of injustices.

These symptoms and attitudes became part of the human nature at the very beginning of history, when the soul of man began to fall sick, after partaking of the fruit of disobedience. In the third chapter of the book of Genesis in the Bible, we can see that the human heart began to immediately manifest the following symptoms:

Fear (expecting to be punished);

Shame (covering themselves with fig leaves);

Insecurity (not feeling protected, but fearing the presence of God);

Sense of guilt (feeling condemned, but trying to justify themselves before God);

Sense of nullity (feeling like failures with no longer value in God’s eyes);

Sense of inferiority (for missing the original plan of God for their lives);

Sense of rejection (being driven out of the presence of God);

Sense of unworthiness (not deserving the love of their Creator any longer).

Disdain for themselves (for having failed).

These are the symptoms of a broken heart that our human nature has inherited from our ancestors, as “that which is born of the flesh is flesh” (John 3:6), and we carry in our inner selves these tendencies known as “emotional wounds”. We all come into this earthly life with these imprints in our soul, and if they are not treated throughout our childhood, they will develop into unhealthy influences that will effect our adult life and relationship with others.

Our soul came into this world with a great need to feel loved, understood and accepted for what we are, and when it cannot find it, then we are starving for a:

Need of acceptance, to feel loved and cherished for what we are;

Need of self worth, to feel important and capable of making a difference;

Need of security, to feel confident in tackling and fulfilling our destiny.

In the coming days we will learn how to recognize these symptoms of a broken heart in our lives, and how to receive a personal diagnosis and treatment for our inner wellness from our “Soul Doctor” and Specialist. Do not miss it, therefore, but come back to regularly visit this site, because you will find here the new updates that will help you in the process of:
